Switch 2 Version: Standard Game Card, Not a Game Key Card
The Switch, Switch 2, Switch 2 Edition and Upgrade Pack relationship explained, including cartridge format, upgrade path and DLC buying combos.
It is not a game key card.
The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition uses a standard game card. Publisher GungHo America has confirmed this publicly.
And that card also runs in a Nintendo Switch 1.
One line: this is not “Switch 2 exclusive,” it is “runs on both, at the spec of whichever console you are on.”
The four-way relationship

That last row is the official product page’s wording: the Upgrade Pack alone cannot play the game.
What the publisher says about card compatibility
The official site carries a note to this effect:
The physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition also runs on Nintendo Switch. When played on a Switch, resolution and frame rate follow the Switch version.
So “buy the Switch 2 card now, use it in an older console later” holds up. The cost is one tier of visual fidelity.
The publisher has not published specific resolution or frame rate figures for either console. This site will not invent them.
Why the game key card rumour started
Because plenty of Switch 2 releases genuinely are key cards: the box holds a download code and the cartridge carries no game data.
This title got caught in that assumption early on. GungHo America later clarified that it ships on a standard card.
Several independent community accounts relay this, including an r/Falcom confirmation thread and game media posts on social platforms. The official site’s note that the card runs on Switch 1 corroborates it.
How Switch 2 owners get the DLC
The official product page states two things:
One: there is no Digital Deluxe version of the Switch 2 Edition.
Two: it recommends Switch 2 players buy “Digital Deluxe Edition plus Upgrade Pack.”
Go by what Nintendo eShop actually lists. The Upgrade Pack’s official description is for upgrading a Switch 1 copy, which is a Switch 1 owner’s path.
